"LEGOs for Love" to aid refugees in Tucson
Arizona Jewish Post, September 14, 2007, p.20
Lindsay O'Neill, daughter of Nancy and Harold O'Neill,
is building a life-sized LEGO Clubhouse and asking friends and family to support her project. The money will be used to sponsor refugee children. "These children come to this country with only the clothes on their back. My goal is to raise money for these children and assist in buying them their basic needs for survival," says Lindsay, who has already raised more then $1,400.
Once the Lindsay's "LEGOs for Love" project is completed, she will donate the LEGO sets to children.

more photos Another Year of Success for LEGO Masters Teams and Coach It was 5:30 am on a cold Saturday morning, but several Tucson kids and their parents were already driving on I-10 heading toward Phoenix. The destination was Carl Hayden High School, where the 4th Annual First LEGO League (FLL) AZ State Championship will begin. Once again, the Tucson LEGO Club had garnered enough community support to send two teams, the Nano Ninos and the Nano Droids, to the Championship under the tutoring and coaching of Chris Minamyer.
Each team has a total of five members consisting of new comers and veterans. As words got around about the educational value of LEGO Robotics, this year's Tournament participants had more than doubled. However, our two teams quickly found their assigned "home base" inside a gymnasium and quickly set to work. No sooner than the teams were ready to settle that it was time for the Opening Ceremony. Beside the usual introduction of judges and local sponsors, this year's participant were treated to an impromptu visit from Governor Janet Napolitano. After a short speech, the Governor sent the kids back to their "home bases" with an even higher level of adrenaline as she pointed out that this is like the Olympics of the minds, and that homework and schoolwork were the exercises in preparation for the competition. As in past events, the Tournament included the Robot competition in which a pre-programmed robot had to achieve as many of the tasks/challenges on a prescribed course, a science project presentation, and an interview by the judges about the robot making process. This year's theme was Nano-technology; and both of our teams chose to use it for medical purposes in their science project presentations. The Nano Ninos wanted to use it for the treatment of Polio, and the Nano Droids the detection and treatment of melanoma. As for the robot competition, the Nano Droids got off to a good start which earned them 280 points. This was enough to placed them in 1st place for both the 1st and 2nd rounds. Apparently, there must have been some pretty strong late comers in the 3rd round as the final scores for the robot competition placed the Nano Droids in 3rd place, and the Nano Ninos in 4th place. In the end, regardless of the teams' placement, every kids that participated in the Tournament was awarded a medal symbolizing their winning attitude for embracing science and technology. However, in an unprecedented fashion, the judging committee awarded our very own Chris Minamyer the Appreciation Award. Anyone would agree that each and every single Coach/Mentor at the Tournament deserves this Award equally. However, in the eyes of the Nano Ninos, the Nano Droids and their parents, there is not and won't be another one as special and deserving as Chris. We would like to extend our deepest appreciation to Howard Ward (TerraSystems Southwest Inc.) and Laura Burge (Ward 6) for their unconditional support and contribution without which our young inventors would not be able to explore their scientific capabilities. FIGHTING URBAN BLIGHT WITH TEENAGE MIGHT
By Burr Snider, Edutopia, February, 2006, Vol. 2 Issue 1, pp 46-49
UrbanPlan is an academically challenging, classroom-based, fifteen-hour study unit in which teams of high school juniors and seniors compete to land the redevelopment contract for the decaying district of Elmwood. The Elmwood district, in the city of Yorktown, is dying. The goal requires the students to address such diverse issues as affordable housing, transit needs, open-space beautification, historical preservation, and the district's retail requirements. Each team member researches an assigned area, then reports to the group. Once a project plan is hammered out on laptops, the teams construct a preliminary model of their design out of LEGO blocks and then go before a "city council" of volunteer land-use professionals to pitch their project. After a detailed grilling, students tweak their product for a final presentation. The "contract" is awarded to the students who produce the most responsive and compelling vision for Elmwood. Rubber band powered vehicle challenge (January 15, 2006).
The first club challenge for the Lego Masters group involved designing a rubber band powered vehicle.
The vehicle was required to travel approximately 12 feet and stop in a specified 12 inch square.
This task was harder than it sounds! Each child present his unique approach to this problem. A variety of vehicles were built and with each iteration the vehicles traveled closer to the goal.
Finally, only Thomas Mathine's vehicle accomplished the task. He got a prize from Chris who initiated this challenge. See you next Sunday and be ready for a new bi-weekly challenge from Chris, our award-winning coach. Please visit our new and old photo albums by clicking the David's Photo link below:
